Running for Love and Loss: Natasha’s Story

Meet Natasha, as she shares how running has become a powerful way for her battle grief and keep the memory of her niece alive. Next June, Natasha will be taking on the Swansea Half Marathon where she describes that every step she takes will be in honor of Lillie-Rae and the family she holds so dear. For Natasha, this race isn’t just about crossing the finish line—it’s about spreading love and raising awareness.

On January 22nd, 2023, Natasha’s world was turned upside down, when her younger sister, Felicity, was rushed to the hospital after suffering unexpected seizures. The family was left shocked and terrified as Felicity had never experienced seizures before. Hours passed in the hospital, with tests and treatments revealing an unexpected and heart-wrenching diagnosis—Felicity was 34 weeks pregnant and suffering from severe pre-eclampsia, a condition that was putting both her and her baby’s life at risk.

Doctors explained that in order to save Felicity, she needed to give birth immediately. Natasha and her family faced the impossible challenge of watching Felicity fight for her life while knowing her baby might not survive. Despite the incredible efforts of the hospital staff, baby Lillie-Rae was born sleeping. The family was devastated, but grateful that Felicity’s life had been saved.

“Without my sister, I’m not me,” Natasha says, recalling the emotional weight of those days. Felicity, her best friend and closest companion, survived one of the most dangerous medical conditions a mother can face, and they got to spend precious time with Lillie-Rae. They held her, cherished her, and vowed to never forget the baby girl who came into their lives and left so soon.

Now, Natasha is channeling her grief, love, and gratitude into something deeply personal. Her goal is not just to remember her niece, but also to honor all babies born sleeping and to raise awareness for the families who endure such painful losses.

“I’ll be running in memory of my beautiful niece and for any other babies who were born sleeping, as it’s so close to my heart,” Natasha shares.

She hopes her story will inspire others, whether they are running, supporting a loved one, or simply looking for ways to give back. By sharing her story and running for Lillie-Rae, Natasha is turning tragedy into a tribute of love, courage, and remembrance.
